The election for the 21st state parliament in Hesse is expected to take place in autumn 2023.

The CDU suffered heavy losses, but was nevertheless by far the strongest party. The Greens gained significantly and, with a lead of 66 votes, became the second strongest party over the SPD , which in turn suffered great losses. The AfD increased significantly, the FDP and the Left increased slightly.

The black-green state government was able to hold its majority, but has only a very narrow majority in parliament with 69 out of 137 seats.
