The NPD benefited from the emerging grand coalition in the federal government , which had become probable after the coalition break between the CDU / CSU and the FDP in October. Through this alliance, the CDU seemed to move into the middle and the NPD managed to win over dissatisfied voters from the right wing.
The election statistics showed that the voters of the NPD Hessen in this election were predominantly middle-aged men:
Age | Men | Women | total |
21–29 years | 8.2% | 4.7% | 6.5% |
30–44 years | 10.0% | 6.4% | 8.2% |

The NPD Hessen was able to record another small success in the local elections in Hessen in 1968 , but was no longer elected to the state parliament in 1970.
