State election in Hesse 1970
The election for the 7th Hessian state parliament took place on November 8, 1970. Before the election, the state parliament decided to introduce postal voting and to enlarge the state parliament from 96 to 110 seats. The lowering of the active voting age to 18 years and the passive voting age to 21 years, which had also been decided , had already been confirmed by the Hessian electorate in a referendum on March 8, 1970 .
Starting position
The SPD , which in 1962 and 1966 , the absolute majority was reached, first appeared with Albert Osswald as a top candidate to that in October 1969 Prime Minister had become after the longstanding and popular Prime Minister Georg August Zinn had resigned for health reasons. The CDU had changed their peak after the election defeat of 1966 (26.4%). Alfred Dregger , regional chairman of the CDU since 1967, stood for a line of the party aimed at sharp confrontation with the SPD, especially in education policy. The Hessian FDP , which in the 50s as far right had been considered standing, took place ahead of the state elections with its president Heinz Herbert Karry the line of the federal party to and sought a coalition with the SPD on as at the federal level since October 1969 was .
Result
The SPD lost an absolute majority, but remained the strongest party. The CDU gained 13.3 percentage points and achieved its best state election result to date with 39.7%. The FDP, which fell below 5% in the state elections in Lower Saxony and Saarland on June 14 and also lost votes in North Rhine-Westphalia on the same day , performed surprisingly well and was almost able to maintain its 1966 result. The NPD left the state parliament with 3%. The result in detail:

consequences
The SPD and FDP had a clear majority with 64 out of 110 seats and, following the Bonn model, formed a social-liberal coalition under the previous Prime Minister Albert Osswald, which took office on December 17th. For the first time the FDP was involved in a Hessian state government.
