Heinz-Herbert Karry (also: Heinz Herbert Karry ; * March 6, 1920 in Frankfurt am Main ; † May 11, 1981 ibid) was a German politician ( FDP ). After his murder, a letter of confession from the left-wing extremist terrorist group "Revolutionary Cells" was found.

Life and political career

Karry was the son of a master dyer and attended the Helmholtz School in Frankfurt's Ostend district , at that time an upper secondary school for boys with a focus on natural sciences. He then completed a commercial apprenticeship in the iron trade. During the National Socialist era , his father was sent to a concentration camp, Heinz-Herbert Karry was persecuted as a "half-Jew" and at times committed as a slave laborer .

In 1945 he settled in Frankfurt am Main as an independent businessman and asset manager, selling ski boots and curtains. He later worked as an asset manager and since 1949 as a successful importer, who rose to become the most successful shoe importer in Germany in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1955 he became a co-owner of a textile wholesaler.

Initially a member of the Society for Civil Rights , he joined the FDP in 1949. He became a member of the district board, in 1958 of the state board and the federal board, later state and federal treasurer. From 1960 to 1972 he was an honorary city councilor for Frankfurt-Bornheim , from 1960 to 1978 a member of the Hessian state parliament , of which he was deputy chairman from 1963 to 1968. From 1968 to 1970 he was chairman of the parliamentary group of the FDP, for which he also ran as a top candidate for the state election in 1970. Since 1974 Karry was also federal treasurer and member of the federal executive committee of the FDP . Karry was treasurer of the FDP at the time when the funds in connection with the Flick affair flowed to the FDP.

From 1970, Karry was the Hessian Minister of Economic Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister in the social-liberal coalition under Prime Minister Albert Osswald . In Frankfurt am Main he campaigned, among other things, for the reconstruction of the Alte Oper , for the use of atomic energy and the construction of the extremely controversial West Runway at Frankfurt's Rhein-Main Airport. Furthermore, a guarantee system for small and medium-sized companies can be traced back to him. Heinz Herbert Karry was the first economics minister of a federal state - in addition to his focus on transport, SME and innovation policy - actively pursued trade policy , for example during his visits to the People's Republic of China - which allowed the first joint German-Chinese joint ventures during this time - or with the Arab states. However, he was always a controversial minister who had repeatedly been involved in economic scandals, such as the sale of an arms factory in the crisis area in the Middle East. In 1981 the public prosecutor's office investigated suspected bribes.

As a Hessian Minister of Economics in 1980 ordered Heinz-Herbert Karry, the immediate implementation of the decision to build the western runway of Frankfurt Airport on.

assassination

Heinz-Herbert Karry was shot in his sleep on May 11, 1981 in his bungalow on Hofhausstrasse in the Seckbach district of Frankfurt . Four of the six bullets shot hit. He was hit in the abdomen and an artery was injured. The heavy internal bleeding led to death after half an hour.

Later a letter from the Revolutionary Cells appeared: "It was planned to make sure that he had to stay in bed longer by shooting several shots in his legs", " and further " that one of the four projectiles that hit him was his pelvic artery shredded and thus fatal was the great - not factored in - coincidence. "

The crime has not yet been clarified, and the perpetrators of the Revolutionary Cells have not been proven beyond doubt. Former Federal Prosecutor General Kurt Rebmann stated that, based on the evidence, he considered the perpetrators of the revolutionary cells to be the most likely. He pointed out in the same interview that this group had never committed homicides before or after.

Karry was the first minister in German post-war history to be assassinated. After a state ceremony in Frankfurt's Paulskirche , a mourning congregation of several thousand people marched through the center of Frankfurt in a silent march.

An informant from the Hessian police later informed the investigating officers of Soko Karry that the murder weapon had been transported by Hans-Joachim Klein in a car belonging to the future German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). Thereupon Fischer's telephone was tapped without result until he moved into the Bundestag in March 1983 . He himself stated that he had only given the car to Klein for repairs. Politicians from other parties accused Fischer of a connection with the murder of Karry until the early 2000s, while investigators, according to information from the Spiegel, now assumed that their informant had given false information.

Honors

Karry was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit (1973) with a star (1976) and shoulder ribbon (1979), the honor plaque of the city of Frankfurt am Main (1970) and the Roman plaque of the city of Frankfurt am Main in silver (1973). He received a state funeral in the main cemetery (grave location: Gewann XIV, 202). In Frankfurt-Seckbach , Rotenburger Strasse was renamed Heinz-Herbert-Karry-Strasse . He was also the holder of the Great Medal of Merit of DEHOGA Hessen (in silver). This medal is awarded exclusively to persons outside the association from public life (e.g. business and politics) who are particularly committed to the issues of the hospitality industry or who have made a contribution to improving the framework conditions.
