A silent march is a special form of a demonstration . Similar to a minute's silence , it is the public expression of mourning and compassion for the victims and relatives of serious accidents (e.g. natural disasters, serious traffic accidents, terrorist attacks), but also of commemorating the victims of violent crimes or the death of prominent personalities .

Legally, silent marches are to be equated with a demonstration. In Germany the right to demonstrate is a basic right that is anchored in Article 8 of the Basic Law ( freedom of assembly ). Which is limited Art. 8 GG (and hence the right to demonstrate) through the Assembly Act .
