MP

Steger was first elected to the German Bundestag in 1976 . In parliament he represented the constituencies of Recklinghausen-Land (1976–1980) and Recklinghausen II (1980–1984). After being appointed Minister of Economic Affairs in Hesse, he resigned from the Bundestag on July 9, 1984 . Public offices

On July 4, 1984, Steger was appointed to the state government led by Prime Minister Holger Börner as Hessian Minister of State for Economics and Technology . During his tenure he was an advocate of nuclear energy. Among other things, he supported the construction of the planned expansion of production for the nuclear companies ALKEM and NUKEM in Hanau, and in 1986 came into confrontation with the Greens , who had been part of a red-green government coalition since 1985. In 1986 he announced the establishment of an international commission to examine the safety of the Biblis nuclear power plant , but did not support the nuclear phase-out called for by the Greens and was thus instrumental in the failure of the coalition.
