The local elections in Hesse in 1968 took place on October 20, at the same time as the local elections in Saarland in 1968 and resulted in the NPD Hesse's entry into many local parliaments, which received nationwide attention . The SPD maintained its position as the dominant party in Hesse . The GDP-BHE continued on its way into insignificance.

initial situation

For more than twenty years, the SPD had been the determining force in Hesse, had provided all prime ministers and was by far the strongest force in the municipalities. The grand coalition governed the federal government . In the previous state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1968 , the NPD was able to continue its winning streak, which it had also led to the Hessian state parliament in the state elections in Hesse in 1966 .
