The state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1968 took place on April 28th. The SPD lost heavily, the CDU also suffered losses. There were gains for the FDP / DVP and above all for the NPD , which was able to win 9.8% of the vote from the start. The grand coalition of CDU and SPD led by Prime Minister Hans Filbinger was continued.

Starting position

The CDU-FDP / DVP coalition led by Prime Minister Kurt Georg Kiesinger was replaced in 1966 by a CDU-SPD coalition led by Prime Minister Hans Filbinger . The SPD functioned as the opposition party in the state parliament until 1966, then the FDP / DVP. The election took place shortly after the " Easter riots " that took place after the assassination attempt on Rudi Dutschke on April 11, 1968. In the opinion of most observers, this event was the main reason for the poor performance of the SPD and the highest result the NPD has ever achieved in state elections.
