The state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1988 took place on March 20. All four parties represented in the state parliament had to accept losses of votes, but were all able to defend their relative position. The CDU lost an absolute majority of the votes, but retained an absolute majority of the seats. The big winners were the other parties, but none of them made it into parliament.

Starting position

In the 1984 state elections , the single-ruling CDU under the leadership of Prime Minister Lothar Späth defended the absolute majority of the votes and mandates. The SPD's top candidate was Dieter Spöri , a member of the Bundestag .

None of the parties represented in the state parliament was able to increase their share of the vote. The CDU won the absolute majority of seats for the fifth time in a row. The election was the last state parliament election in Baden-Württemberg with an absolute majority.
