State election in Baden-Württemberg in 1960
The state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1960 took place on May 15. The SPD was able to record the greatest increase in votes, but it was the only party to leave the all-party coalition and henceforth functioned as the only opposition party. On March 12, 1961, a re-election took place in two constituencies in Waiblingen, after which the CDU was given an overhang mandate and the total number of seats increased from 120 to 121. The repetition had become necessary because of the judgment of the State Court of February 6, 1961, because the CDU and FDP had divided the two constituencies between themselves and an FDP candidate who had not been nominated felt at a disadvantage.
Starting position
The starting point was an all-party coalition that was led by Prime Minister Gebhard Müller until December 17, 1958 and then by Prime Minister Kurt Georg Kiesinger .
