The state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1984 took place on March 25th. The CDU under Prime Minister Lothar Späth was able to defend its absolute majority despite a slight loss of votes. The SPD (under their top candidate Ulrich Lang ) and FDP / DVP also suffered a loss of votes. Only the Greens recorded an increase in votes and thus replaced the FDP / DVP as the third strongest force in the state parliament. The other parties remained insignificant, they only received half a percent of all votes.

Overhang and
compensation mandates
CDU: 3 overhang seats.
SPD: 2 compensation seats
CDU: 1 overhang mandate

The CDU won 67 of its 68 seats as direct mandates. In the Biberach electoral district , the CDU again won both the direct mandate and a second mandate . In no later state election was a party able to win two seats in one constituency. The election was the last state election before 2016 in which the CDU received a second mandate. As in 1980, the SPD was able to win three direct mandates; The rest of the MPs, like all MPs from the FDP and the Greens, entered the state parliament through second mandates. The state election law of Baden-Württemberg knows lists. The Greens did not run because they missed the deadline in the three constituencies in the Esslingen district .
