State election in Baden-Württemberg 2001
The state elections in Baden-Württemberg 2001 took place on March 25, parallel to the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate . It led to a strengthening of the two big popular parties, especially the SPD , whereas the FDP / DVP and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen lost votes and the Republicans failed to re-enter the state parliament after nine years of membership in the state parliament .
Starting position
In the 1996 state elections , the CDU, under the leadership of Prime Minister Erwin Teufel, defended its position as the strongest force, while its previous coalition partner, the SPD, under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Economics Minister Dieter Spöri , won 25.1 percent of the vote and thus up to her then the worst result since the country was founded.
Top candidates
For the CDU, Prime Minister Erwin Teufel (62) ran again as the top candidate. After Dieter Spöri, the top candidate in 1988 , 1992 and 1996, decided not to run again, the new state chairman Ute Vogt (37) ran as the top candidate of the SPD.
Result
According to the official final result, the CDU, which has ruled since 1953, was able to achieve a significant increase in votes of 3.5 percentage points and with 44.8 percent the best result since 1988 , while the FDP, coalition partner since 1996, dropped to 8.1 percent of the votes.
Although the SPD missed its goal of becoming the strongest force, it achieved a respectable success : for the first time since the state elections in 1972 it was able to improve its share of the vote. With a vote increase of 8.2 percentage points and a final result of 33.3 percent of the votes, it came to its best result since 1976 .
In contrast, the Greens lost 4.4 percentage points and this time lagged the FDP / DVP with 7.7 percent of the vote.
The Republicans missed re-entry into the state parliament by 4.4 percentage points.
The coalition of CDU and FDP / DVP under leadership of Prime Minister Erwin Teufel was continued ( Cabinet Devil IV ).
