Gains and losses
The state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1964 took place on April 26th. The CDU was able to record great gains and missed an absolute majority by two seats. The GDP could not build on the successes of its predecessor party GB / BHE and clearly missed the (re-) entry into the state parliament. Prime Minister Kurt Georg Kiesinger then entered into a coalition of CDU and FDP / DVP . The SPD remained the sole opposition party .
Starting position
The starting point was a coalition of CDU, FDP / DVP and GDP (GB / BHE) led by Prime Minister Kurt Georg Kiesinger . The SPD alone acted as the opposition party in the state parliament.
