The state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1972 took place on April 23. With a turnout of 80%, the CDU , led by Prime Minister Hans Filbinger , gained almost nine percentage points and achieved an absolute majority. The SPD gained almost as strongly and achieved the best Baden-Württemberg state election result in its history, while the FDP / DVP suffered great losses. The NPD left the state parliament. A single CDU government under the old and new Prime Minister Filbinger replaced the previous grand coalition of CDU and SPD.

Starting position

After the election in 1968 , the CDU / SPD coalition led by Prime Minister Hans Filbinger was continued. Opposition parties in the state parliament were FDP / DVP and NPD. The NPD, which was still very successful in the state elections in 1968, decided not to run again and instead called on its supporters to vote for the CDU. This decision was preceded by a series of electoral defeats by the NPD, in which it had lost its state parliament mandates in all state parliaments and did not exceed the 5% hurdle in any election.
