history

After the founding of the NPD in 1964, regional associations quickly formed. The Baden-Württemberg regional association was established in 1965, and Wilhelm Gutmann was elected as the first regional chairman. In Baden-Württemberg, too, the structures of the dissolving DRP formed the basis of the organization of the new party.

The state election in Baden-Württemberg in 1968 took place shortly after the " Easter riots " that took place on April 11, 1968 after the assassination attempt on Rudi Dutschke . In the opinion of most observers, this event was the main reason for the poor performance of the SPD and the highest result of the NPD that this party has ever achieved in state elections. It benefited from the grand coalition governing the federal government . Through this alliance, the CDU had moved into the middle, and the NPD managed to win over dissatisfied voters from the right wing.

The election victory remained an episode. In the state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1972, the NPD decided not to run again and instead called on its supporters to vote for the CDU. This decision was preceded by a series of electoral defeats by the NPD, as a result of which it was unable to overcome the five percent hurdle in any election and thus lost its seats in all state parliaments.
