The Shine of Silence (original title: Dear John ) is a 2010 literary film adaptation of the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks of the same name . The main roles act Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum and directed by Lasse Hallstrom .

action

The young Savannah Curtis meets the soldier John Tyree during her semester break. John is currently on home vacation and is visiting his father. Savannah and John fall in love, but have only two weeks before she goes back to college and he has to go to his base in Germany. During this time John also met Tim, a friend of Savannah, and his son Alan and became friends with them. John has another year in the military and promises Savannah to come back forever. The two want to keep in touch and write letters to each other.

As a result of the attacks of September 11, 2001 , John decides, contrary to his promise, to extend his military service by two more years. Savannah gives in and the two keep writing. John is stationed in Afghanistan during this time. Two months have passed without a letter from Savannah. With the following letter, she ends the relationship and informs John that she is engaged to another man. As a result, John is devastated and concentrates on his duties in the military. Several years pass before he has to return home because his father had a stroke . The father eventually dies and John has his affairs to run.

He goes to Savannah's home to tell her about his father, whom she liked very much. He is disappointed with her reunion as she is not the cheerful, self-assured and idealistic Savannah he got to know. He accuses her of breaking up with him in a letter instead of at least using the satellite phone. She replies that she couldn't have done it if she heard his voice. Contrary to John's expectations, Savannah has married her friend Tim, who is suffering from cancer, in order to be able to stand by him and help him with his autistic son. After this confession, they hug and remember their time together. When saying goodbye, John cannot say goodbye to her as she wishes. Both suffer from the situation. John starts selling his father's valuable coin collection.

John is back on the job and receives another letter from Savannah. She tells him that Tim has died but was able to spend two more months with her due to an anonymous donation. She is sure that she and John will see each other again. In the last scene they meet again at a café, whether by appointment or by chance is unclear. They both smile and hug each other.

Reviews

Most of the reviews rated the film as mediocre to negative: On the pages Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes , the flick achieved 43% (34 reviews) and 29% (rating 4.4 / 10; Top Critics: 25%). The film lexicon two thousand and one sums up in a similar way : “A lukewarm melodrama, the female main character of which remains colorless in her exaggerated selflessness, and which, in misunderstood discretion, does not even function as a sentimental smack.” Cinema even concludes: “With this greasy romance, Lasse Hallström sinks to the lowest point his career. "

Other unsorted statements:

The Shine of Silence consistently avoids any discussion of the realities of war. Only at the moment of John's greatest despair, after Savannah dumped him in writing, does the film contrast the leisurely narration with a short melee scene in which John is wounded. Incidentally, the war in Hallström's film is primarily characterized by a sustained patriotism that exudes soldier romance with high-gloss panels and thus gives the separation of lovers the conservative note of fateful inevitability. "

- critic.de

“Savannah is an always benevolent angel who selflessly cares for the autistic son next door and is socially committed. And John is the good soldier who puts patriotic duties above his private happiness. Even director Hallström, with God's work and the devil's contribution still on the Oscar course, doesn't come up with much more than long walks on the beach or sensitive conversations around the campfire and thus paints a nostalgic soft-focus vision of good America in which faith, family and patriotism are irrevocable Values are. "

- welt.de

“Richard Jenkins is more exciting than John's autistic father, who is incapable of showing his son his feelings and therefore makes sure he reaches for a handkerchief. Nevertheless, Hallström keeps the ball rather flat and stages soulful scenes with understatement: an upscale teardrop with beautiful ingredients. "
