Joshua Radin (born June 14, 1974 in Shaker Heights , Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American musician, singer and author.

Career

Singer and guitarist Joshua Radin is a good friend of the director and actor Zach Braff ( Scrubs ), through whom he is greatly encouraged. He met Braff while studying art at Northwestern University. After completing his studies, Radin worked for some time as an art teacher for fifth and sixth grades.

When Zach Braff made his first film ( Garden State ) in 2003 , Joshua Radin was also there, who can also be seen briefly in one scene. He later said that the fact that his best friend could make a movie made him pursue his dreams and record songs. His music doesn’t appear on the Grammy-winning soundtrack for Garden State, Joshua calls this a "huge missed opportunity" today.

In early 2004, Radin's song Winter was played in an episode of the series Scrubs with Zach Braff and enjoyed great popularity, so that in mid-2004 Joshua's first CD, First Between 3rd and 4th , was released, an EP with six songs. In the period that followed, his music became more and more popular, followed by musical appearances in almost all major American series hits such as Grey's Anatomy , Brothers & Sisters , One Tree Hill , Castle or Dr. House . After his musical appearance on the soundtrack of Zach Braff's second film The Last Kiss , other major film production companies discovered Radin for themselves. So it happens that he can be heard in the films Closer and Catch and Release, among others . With increasing popularity, appearances on American television shows such as The Ellen DeGeneres Show , Conan O'Brien , Jimmy Kimmel , CBS Early Show increased .

Radin's first full album We Were Here was released on February 7, 2006 on iTunes and made it into the top 50 (USA), a month later the album was also available on CD. His album garnered high praise, with some critics claiming "Joshua Radin says more with a whisper than most with a scream". The American media reported him as something of a new Nick Drake and Elliott Smith .

His first record label was Sony, with whom he had signed a long-term contract for several albums. After submitting his second album, Sony Radin pointed out that there was no top 40 hit on the album and rejected his version. He then bought himself out of the contract and is now with a small indie label (MOM + POP).

From September 9, 2008, Joshua Radin's second album Simple Times was released on iTunes before it was in record stores from September 30, 2008. In 2010 the album was also released as a UK version, on which some songs had been revised.

On August 7, 2010, Radin confirmed on Twitter October 12, 2010 as the release date for his third album The Rock and the Tide . The UK version of his third album was released in 2011. The track list on the album was changed and some tracks were removed. His single I Missed You only appeared on the UK version of the album. In the same year he contributed the song Paperweight to the movie The Shine of Silence with Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried .

Genre and Trivia

His musical genre is American folk, so it is not surprising that his role models are Bob Dylan , Cat Stevens and Simon and Garfunkel . His tonal trademarks are above all the catchy, multi-faceted, sometimes distorted or electronically processed voice, the sound reduced to soft guitar chords, which sometimes gives his songs a campfire atmosphere, as well as the tempo, which is usually far behind the - sometimes very brisk - American Folk pace lags behind. The most popular song "Winter", which was also the first song recorded by Scrubs , is reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel mainly because of the very intimate singing.

On his last tour Joshua reported that he himself had created a new genre called "whisper rock".

During an encore he jumped into the audience and played two more songs 'unplugged'. He had to sing loudly, but it was whispered to the audience. He has now converted the expression “whisper rock” into a form that can now be seen as his symbol on his fan shirts.
