Shaker Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County , State of Ohio . It is a so-called tram - Subdivision ( English streetcar suburb ) of Cleveland km east and is just under 14 whose center.

Shaker Heights, like its neighboring town Cleveland Heights , is located on a plateau that extends east of Cleveland. It is about 10 km from the southern shore of Lake Erie at an altitude of around 320 m above sea level. NHN .
history
Today's municipal area was originally the land of a Shaker community , which had dissolved in 1889, which was acquired in 1905 by the real estate speculators and later railway tycoons Van Sweringen. The place was founded in 1911 as Shaker Village , which was developed as a planned city based on the model of a garden city by the Van Sweringen brothers. The place was given its current name in 1913 at the latest. Shaker Heights has had city status since 1931.
Demographics
Shaker Heights has long been one of the wealthiest cities in America and a popular residence for the wealthy white middle class of entrepreneurs and intellectuals. Numerous African Americans have now moved to the city. In 2007, 61% of the population were white and 34% black.
