Bart Joris Tommelein (born May 4, 1962 in Ostend ) is a Belgian politician of the Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (Open VLD). He has been a parliamentarian since 2003 and was Federal State Secretary for Combating Social Fraud, Data Protection and the North Sea in the Michel government . After Annemie Turtelboom (Open VLD) resigned in April 2016, he became Vice Prime Minister of the Flemish Government. At the local level, Tommelein is a council member in Ostend.

Life

Bart Tommelein studied adapted communication at the Hoger Instituut voor Bedrijfsopleiding in Ghent and then entered the banking and insurance sector (Anhyp, now Axa ).

He made his first political experiences in the Flemish -national Volksunie (VU). He headed the party 's youth association ( Volksuniejongeren , Vujo) and was elected to the Ostend municipal council in 1989 for VU. In 1992, when he took on a management position at Anhyp, Tommelein withdrew from politics for the time being.

He returned in 1999 when he joined the VLD and became a consultant and later press spokesman for the then Flemish Prime Minister Patrick Dewael (Open VLD). He also got back into active politics, initially as a council member in Ostend and from 2003 as a federal chamber representative. There he took over the chairmanship of the committee of inquiry, which dealt with the possible disregard for the separation of powers in the context of the " Fortis affair". In 2009 Bart Tommelein was elected to the Flemish Parliament and at the same time became Community Senator. In Ostend he was able to win the mandate of first lay judge after the municipal elections in 2012.

After the federal and regional elections on May 25, 2014, in which he was re-elected to the Flemish Parliament, Tommelein was appointed State Secretary in the federal government under Prime Minister Charles Michel ( MR ) with the responsibility for combating social fraud, data protection and the North Sea.

When the Flemish Vice Prime Minister Annemie Turtelboom (Open VLD) announced her resignation at the end of April 2016 , Tommelein moved to the regional government under Prime Minister Geert Bourgeois ( N-VA ) as her successor . Philippe De Backer (Open VLD), up to then a member of the European Parliament , replaced Tommelein in the federal government.
