action

Theatrical version

Michael and Jenna seem to make the perfect couple: They've been together for three years, and now that Jenna is pregnant, they plan to move into their own house. In addition, Jenna's parents would love to see the two married. When asked about this, Michael puts forward his enormous workload and Jenna's dissertation as reasons why the wedding would have to be postponed for a while. In truth, however, he has gotten into a crisis of meaning because he believes he can see the rest of his life in front of him: boring, stuffy and without any surprise.

At a friend's wedding, Michael meets the younger Kim, to whom he confides his doubts. Since she thinks he's almost ready to break up with his girlfriend, she starts flirting with him. Although he is fascinated by her, he does not succumb to temptation. Kim leaves the wedding a little later, but not without telling him where she goes to university and usually spends her free time.

A while later, Michael actually goes to her and pretends to have been in the area “by chance”. Kim notices his interest in her and invites him to a party. Michael accepts this invitation and asks his office colleague and friend Chris to lie for him so that Jenna won't find out about the date - but without telling him the real reason for the request. Chris immediately suspects a woman behind it and asks Michael not to be drawn into the matter. However, Michael denies that there is another woman involved and pretends to want to meet an old college friend, which Chris still does not believe him.

After the party, Michael and Kim kiss. She then invites him to spend the night with her - her roommate is not there overnight. Since Michael is plagued by remorse because of the impending infidelity, he declines the offer. At the same time, the father of Izzy, a friend of Michael and Jenna, dies. Several friends and acquaintances visit Izzy's house to support the family in this situation and to give consolation. Here Jenna meets Chris, who does not manage to convincingly convey the lie Michael had asked for. Since Michael's cell phone is switched off the entire evening, Chris cannot warn him that Jenna suspects something. When he finally comes home and Jenna asks him where he has been, he first claims that he spent the evening with Chris. Only now does he find out that Izzy's father has passed away, that Jenna has already met Chris at Izzy's and the lie has therefore been exposed. Now he is forced to come out with the truth, assuring her that the meeting means nothing and that he did not sleep with Kim, but only kissed her. The angry Jenna drives him out of the house anyway.

When Michael is alone, he receives a call from Kim, who asks if he would like to come over again - just to talk a bit. Michael finally agrees, drives to her - and only shortly afterwards the two sleep together. The next morning Michael tries to sneak away, but leaves his keys lying around. When he returns, Kim is already awake and asks him why he didn't say goodbye. He excuses himself that he didn't want to wake her because he has to go to work early and leaves the apartment.

In the office, Michael decides to call it a day earlier and see Jenna. At that moment, Kim suddenly bursts in through the door to give him a CD that he has compiled himself. Michael admits to her that he is still in love with Jenna, who is also pregnant by him. He asks Kim to apologize for not telling her about this and leaves the office building.

Michael drives to Jenna's parents, where her father Stephen talks extensively with him. He urges Michael to always be honest with Jenna and explains what love really means. Michael then goes to Jenna's room to talk to her. After the alleged reconciliation, he finally confesses to her that he was with Kim on the night of the argument and slept with her there. Jenna can't believe what she's hearing and flees from her parents' house. She gets into her car and drives back to their shared apartment. Michael drives after her, and since she refuses to talk to him, he wants to wait in front of the door until she changes her mind. He now has no choice but to stay on the spot for days, as Jenna remains steadfast in her opinion. One evening, however, she begins to talk to him through the closed door. She says the end of a partnership is like the death of a person, then finally opens the door and lets Michael back in.

Alternative ending (only on DVD)

After Jenna opens the door, the film jumps a few years into the future. From the off Michael talks can result in over his continuing relationship with Jenna and how small decisions dramatic consequences. In the final scene Jenna jogs while another man follows her. However, she only gives him a short smile and continues walking at high speed.

Director Tony Goldwyn

History of origin

According to producer Garry Lucchesi , the production company Lakeshore Entertainment was so enthusiastic about the Italian original of the film that they bought the rights to a US remake from director and screenwriter Gabriele Muccino . The contract for the script was awarded to Paul Haggis , who had already filmed It began with Lakeshore in September . In addition, the production company also bought Haggis' later Oscar- winning film Million Dollar Baby , for which he had no buyer at the time. Haggis claims that he found the original film so brilliant that he merely translated it into American, with the exception of the last scene, which he rewrote. While the leading actor in L'Ultimo Bacio lies to his girlfriend, Michael Jenna confesses that he slept with Kim, which leads to another conflict. After the first version of the script commissioned by Paul Haggis was completed, Tony Goldwyn was proposed as director, who had worked with Lucchesi in 1990 Ghost Message from Sam . He was enthusiastic about the "honesty" and at the same time "entertaining" of the material and agreed.

The film, in Madison , Wisconsin and Montreal was shot, played with a budget of 20 million US dollars worldwide about 15 million US dollars again.

In Germany, the film is sold as a pure comedy, but also has drama criteria throughout .

occupation

Main actor Zach Braff

Garry Lucchesi later explained that Zach Braff was the first choice for the role of Michael because of its versatility and those responsible were previously entered one year in contact with him Jacinda Barrett , however, was Tony Goldwyn's first choice after them in their role in The human flaw had seen. Since she knew the Italian original and was enthusiastic about it, she ended her honeymoon in Vietnam earlier to be able to participate in the casting for The Last Kiss . According to Garry Lucchesi, the role of Kim was very popular because every woman in Hollywood wanted to film with Zach Braff. The choice finally fell on Rachel Bilson , who, due to her naturalness, went well with the role of Kim.

Leading actress Jacinda Barrett

The casting of the lovers Chris and Lisa took a long time, according to those responsible. After 100 actors had already auditioned for the role of Chris, Tony Goldwyn approached producer Tom Rosenberg with the suggestion that Casey Affleck be engaged, because he had this in mind from the beginning and in his opinion he was the best fit for the role. Rosenberg immediately offered Affleck the role, and Affleck agreed. In Goldwyn's opinion, the role of Lisa was very difficult to cast, because on the one hand she shouldn't seem too sweet and vulnerable, but on the other hand she shouldn't seem too harsh either. Ultimately, those in charge selected Canadian actress Lauren Lee Smith for the role.

Even Michael Weston in the role of Izzy was Tony Goldwyn's first choice. Zach Braff stated that he tried to get his longtime friend and roommate Weston to play a role in the film, but that director Goldwyn had already approached him about the role independently. Marley Shelton and Eric Christian Olsen got their part as Arianna and Kenny after auditioning for these roles. Blythe Danner joined the crew as Anna because she and director Tony Goldwyn have been friends since he was ten. Even Tom Wilkinson belonged from the beginning to the shortlist for the role of Stephen.
