Aimee Mann (born September 8, 1960 in Richmond , Virginia ) is an American singer-songwriter , bassist and guitarist .

Aimee Mann attended Berklee College of Music in Boston but dropped out to make music with her first punk rock band, The Young Snakes .
In 1983 she co-founded the new wave band 'Til Tuesday , which achieved modest success in 1985 with their first album Voices Carry . They received a Grammy in the “Best Newcomer” category. In addition to her activities with the band, Aimee Mann also appeared with Rush as a background singer for the song Time Stand Still in 1987 and can be seen in the accompanying music video. Her band 'Til Tuesday released two more albums before they split up in 1990.
In 1993 Aimee Mann's first solo album Whatever was released , which was not very successful commercially, but received rave reviews and paved the way for the next work I'm With Stupid (1995). Again, the reviews were better than the sales.
In 1998, Aimee Mann made a brief appearance as a German nihilist in The Big Lebowski .
Aimee Mann was more successful than with her first albums when she contributed eight tracks to the soundtrack of the film Magnolia in 1999 , including the Oscar- nominated song Save Me , which was later also featured on her record Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo was released. The writer and director Paul Thomas Anderson said he shot an adaptation of Aimee Mann's songs with Magnolia.
In the same year Aimee Mann broke up because of the restrictive artistic influence of her record company, the collaboration with this and founded her own label SuperEgo Records . The musician also broke new ground by selling her works directly on her website. In 2000, Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo on SuperEgo Records , followed in 2002 by the album Lost In Space , which was re-released in 2004 as a "Special Edition" and now a second CD with six live recordings, two B-sides and two previously unreleased songs contained. In 2003 Lost Space received the annual German Record Critics' Prize .
With at St. Ann's Warehouse Live was released in November 2004 on DVD and CD , a recording of concerts, the man in July 2004 Aimee Brooklyn had given. In May 2005 she released the concept album The Forgotten Arm . The songs tell the story of a couple starting with the first meeting up to the road trip together.
Her Christmas album One More Drifter in the Snow was released in October 2006 . It mainly contains cover versions of well-known titles, but also two own songs. The seventh studio album with the title @ #% & *! Smilers was released on June 6, 2008. In 2011, Aimee Mann made a guest appearance on the comedy series Portlandia ; she plays herself who is the new cleaning lady for a Portland couple (episode 3 "Aimee", season 1). The eighth studio album Charmer was released on September 18, 2012, and the ninth album Mentall Illness was released in 2017.
In 2013, Aimee Mann started a collaboration with Ted Leo under the name The Both . The duo released their self-titled debut album in April 2014.
Aimee Mann is a founding member of United Musicians , an association of musicians who are committed to ensuring that every artist should retain the copyrights to their works.
