Grammy Award for Best Folk Album

The Grammy Award for Best Folk Album , in German "Grammy Award for the best folk album", is a music prize that has been awarded at the annual Grammy Awards since 2012 . The award goes to artists for albums from the field of folk music .

For the Grammy Award for Best Blues Album, the Grammys awarded until 2011 for Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Traditional Folk Album were merged, as NARAS wanted to significantly reduce the number of categories and, in some cases, do away with the separation of vocal and instrumental performances in the categories. This price in particular was set up due to the increasing difficulty of differentiating and assigning follow-up recordings to the two original categories. The award is given to albums that consist of new recordings from folk music for at least 51% of the playing time.

The award has so far only been given to American artists, with The Civil Wars award being the only one so far to a folk band. In 2013 the award went to a total of four musicians: Yo-Yo Ma , Stuart Duncan , Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile .
