Band history

The Carolina Chocolate Drops on show in Birmingham, Alabama, 2008

The three band members met in 2005 at the Black Banjo Gathering at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. Their common interest in the roots of country and rock music connected them and so they founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops and played music in the style of old-time music of the 20s and 30s of the 20th century. They recorded four albums with independent labels from 2006 onwards before they got a record deal with Nonesuch in 2010 . Her first album Genuine Negro Jig , published by Nonesuch, reached number 1 in the bluegrass and number 2 in the folk albums; in the newcomer charts (Heatseekers Albums) they also came to number 2.

At the Grammy Awards 2011 , they won the award for the best traditional folk album of the year with this album. The follow-up album Leaving Eden was nominated in 2013 for a Grammy in the category "Best Folk Album".
