Paul McCartney received the Grammy Award for Best Historical Album in 2012 for the album he produced, Band on the Run (Paul McCartney Archive Collection - Deluxe Edition)

The Grammy Award for Best Historical Album , in German "Grammy award for the best historical album", is a music prize that has been awarded by the American Recording Academy since 1979 . The award goes to the producer and sound engineer of the respective album.

History and background

Since 1959, the Grammy Awards are presented annually in numerous categories by the Recording Academy in the United States to recognize artistic achievement, technical competence, and overall excellence regardless of album sales or chart position.

One of these categories is the Grammy Award for Best Historical Album . The award has been presented since 1979. Since the first award, the name of the award has changed slightly several times:

  • In 1979 the award was called the Grammy Award for Best Historical Repackage Album
  • In 1980 it was called the Grammy Award for Best Historical Reissue
  • In 1981 it was renamed the Grammy Award for Best Historical Reissue Album
  • Since 1982 it has been named the Grammy Award for Best Historical Album.

The award is given to people responsible for compiling and producing the album. The roles of these people have changed over time:

  • From 1979 to 1993 the producer (s) were awarded
  • From 1994 to 1995 the award went to the compilation producer (s)
  • In 1996 the artistic director, the compilation producer, the sound engineers and the creators of the album notes received the award
  • From 1997 to 2018 the compilation producer and / or the sound engineer received awards
  • The compilation producer, the sound engineer and the restoration engineer have received the award since 2019.
