The award for R&B performances by men was awarded in parallel with the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for women and the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for men.
The award was introduced in 1967 as Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental , parallel to the Grammy Award for Best R&B Solo Vocal Performance, Male Or Female. From 1969 to 2011 the name changed several times and since the Grammy Awards in 2012 this award has not been awarded because it was added to the category Best R&B Performance .
The prize was first awarded in 1968 at the 10th Grammy Awards. It was won by Ramsey Lewis for the song Hold It Right There . The band Earth, Wind and Fire received the award a total of four times and is thus the band with the most frequent victories of this award, but Chaka Khan also received the award four times, with him twice as the singer of the band Rufus and twice as a duet partner. The last Grammy in this category went to the band Sade in 2011 for the song Soldier Of Love .
