biography
Barrino began singing in the church choir at the age of five. In 2002 she became the mother of a daughter. She is currently working towards her graduation. Fantasia's advance into the American Idol finale was overshadowed by fierce allegations. They ranged from racism to suspicion of manipulated vote counting.
In the finale itself on May 26, 2004, Barrino received exuberant praise from the jury for her performance. Record producer Simon Cowell described her as the best singer of all over 70 "idols" who have been chosen worldwide in recent years. At the end of the telephone vote, in which over 65 million television viewers participated, Barrino was just ahead of her competitor Diana DeGarmo .
Fantasia's first single, I Believe , was released in the United States on June 15, 2004. The song was written by Tamyra Gray , who took part in the first season of American Idol , and was fourth there. As with the American Idol winners of previous years, the single was very successful commercially. On July 10, 2004, it reached number 1 on the US Billboard charts. In 2006 she came back with her new album and the first single Hood Boy .
In 2011 Fantasia Barrino received the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her single Bittersweet , making it the last artist in this category to be merged with several other categories in the following year.
