Hicks 2006

Taylor Reuben Hicks (born October 7, 1976 in Birmingham , Alabama ) is an American soul singer , songwriter and musician . His breakthrough came in early 2006 when he won the fifth season of the American Idol talent show .

Career

Taylor Hicks grew up in the state of Alabama and developed his musical talent without formal training. His main interest was soul and R&B music, and Ray Charles in particular was one of his musical role models. He won his first music competition in high school. He then began studying economics at Auburn University , but then dropped out in favor of a music career and went to Nashville .

A live album entitled In Your Time was released in 1997 . In the following years he established himself as a live musician and was hired for the opening act for artists such as James Brown and the Drive-By Truckers . In the meantime he also performed with the band Passing Through . In 2005 he attempted to enter the music business with his first studio album Under the Radar . He also applied to participate in the American Idol talent show that same year . Although he was one of the older candidates at the age of 30 and was rather an atypical candidate, which was reinforced by his prematurely gray hair, he was able to convince the audience musically and was able to win the competition without having to jump off.

The song Takin 'It to the Streets , originally by the Doobie Brothers , was released beforehand , with which Hicks had come into the round of the last twelve and which was released on the show's compilation album. This was the first time he entered the US charts. After the final, at the end of June 2006, the official winning song, Do I Make You Proud? released. It sold over 100,000 times in the first week and went straight to number 1 on the American Billboard Hot 100 , but only lasted 1 week. Overall, his single Do I Make You Proud? only two weeks in the top 10 of the single charts. At the end of the year, the album Taylor Hicks was released . It debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and quickly achieved platinum status . Further songs did not make it into the official single charts, but with Just to Feel That Way and Heaven Knows he was able to place two songs in the top 20 of the adult contemporary charts.

In the following years Taylor Hicks was also seen as a musical actor in Grease in the role of Teen Angel on Broadway and on tour. The next album, The Distance , was released in 2009. It reached number 58 and contained another adult contemporary hit called What's Right Is Right .
