Phillip Phillips (born September 20, 1990 in Leesburg , Georgia ) is an American rock singer . In 2012, he won the eleventh season of American Idol .

Life

Phillips was born in Leesburg, Georgia, to Sheryl and Phillip "Donnie" Phillips, Sr.. He grew up in Sasser and Leesburg and attended Lee County High School. Phillips graduated from Albany Technical College. Before Phillips joined American Idol , he worked in the family's pawn shop.

At the age of 14, his brother-in-law Benjamin Neil introduced him to music, whom he considers his mentor. In 2009 he formed the Phillip Phillips Band with Neil and his other brother-in-law Todd Urick, with whom he performed in local events and shops. A year later he won a singing competition. He himself describes his music as "Jazz, Rock and Alternative Sound". Before Phillips joined American Idol , he auditioned for America's Got Talent . There he did not make it to the finals.

American Idol

Phillips auditioned in Savannah, Georgia, auditioning Superstition by Stevie Wonder . At the request of the jury, he gave another song for the best, Michael Jackson's thriller with his guitar. He made the leap into the rounds of Hollywood and Las Vegas. On February 23, he was announced as the first among the top 25 candidates as a top 13 finalist. During the theme shows, Phillips suffered from kidney stones and had to be operated on eight times. Because of the pain, he often considered leaving the competition.

Phillips was the only candidate of the season who was never in danger of leaving the show as a wobbly candidate. In the final, he was finally chosen as the winner with a record-breaking vote of 132 million votes and prevailed against his rival Jessica Sanchez. His winning song Home came to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and, with nearly 4.5 million downloads sold, is not only the best-selling American Idol winning song, but also the best-selling single that an American Idol candidate has ever released.

His debut album The World from the Side of the Moon was released in November 2012 and went to number 4 on the Billboard 200 with 169,000 copies sold.
