history

The place was the highest point on the North Carolina Railroad , which ran between Charlotte and Goldsboro from 1856 . That gave her the name. High Point was founded in 1859. At that time the most important industry was the processing of tobacco and wood as well as the manufacture of textiles. The first furniture factory was opened in 1889.

An important employer in the city is Thomas Built Buses , a plant belonging to the Daimler Trucks division of Daimler AG that builds school buses for the US market.
