The Daimler Truck AG is one of the world's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, with over 35 world's main sites and around 100,000 employees. Daimler Trucks & Daimler Buses includes the seven vehicle brands BharatBenz, Freightliner, FUSO, Mercedes-Benz, Setra, Thomas Built Buses and Western Star. Daimler Truck AG is based in Stuttgart and has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG since November 1, 2019 . Daimler Trucks is the global market leader in the field of medium and heavy trucks over 6 tons gross vehicle weight. In 2018, 517,300 vehicles were delivered in this area.

In addition to the Mercedes-Benz trucks , the Freightliner , Western Star , BharatBenz , Thomas Built Buses and FUSO brands belong to Daimler Trucks. In 2018, the most important sales market was the NAFTA countries with 37%, followed by Asia with 32%, Western Europe ( EU plus Norway and Switzerland) with 17% and Latin America (excluding the NAFTA country Mexico) with 7%.

In 2018, Daimler Buses maintained its market leadership in the core markets of Europe, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina and sold 30,888 vehicles worldwide. In addition to the Mercedes-Benz buses, BharatBenz Buses, FUSO Buses and Setra belong to Daimler Buses.

Business figures

Of the total of 298,683 employees in the Daimler Group at the end of 2018 (2017: 289,321), 82,953 (2016: 79,483) were employed in the Daimler Trucks division, of which 30,447 (2017: 30,424) were in Germany and 16,647 in the USA (2017: 15,002). In 2018, Daimler Trucks accounted for around 23 percent of the Group's total sales (2018: € 167.4 billion; 2017: € 164.3 billion).

Daimler Trucks locations

The 24 locations of Daimler Trucks and their subsidiaries worldwide are located in Germany (5), Turkey, France, Portugal, the USA (7) and Mexico (2), Brazil (2), Japan (4), South Africa and India. The product range includes light, medium and heavy trucks for long-distance, distribution and construction site transport as well as municipal and special vehicles such as the Unimog . Vehicles for military use are also manufactured. Due to the close links in terms of production technology, the Thomas Built Buses (subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America ) and Mitsubishi Fuso brands are also part of Daimler Trucks.

Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth

The plant in Wörth am Rhein is the world's largest truck assembly plant. It has a floor area of ​​2,463,186 m² and a constructed area of ​​544,729 m². The average daily production is over 470 vehicles (as of July 2018). 10,357 employees worked at the Wörth plant at the end of 2017. The following Mercedes-Benz trucks are manufactured in Wörth :

Diesel engines for trucks are produced and assembled at the Mannheim plant. In addition to the cylinder crankcases, flywheels and cylinder heads, the truck axles are also cast in the company's own foundry. In addition, vehicles (e.g. B-Class, Sprinter) are converted to natural gas drive and fuel cell vehicles are built in Mannheim . One of the EvoBus factories is also located on the same site . This is where the Mercedes-Benz city buses and the bodyshells for coach production are produced in Ulm .

Gearboxes and planetary axles for trucks are produced in Gaggenau . The products include manual and automated gearboxes, commercial vehicle axles (AP and portal axles) and torque converters for car automatic transmissions. Furthermore, products in the field of machining technology, forming technology (pressed parts for Mercedes A- and B-Class) and services in the field of international logistics are offered. The Rastatt plant , which was established in 1971 and is commonly known as the Rastatt transmission plant , manufactures transmissions for trucks and the A and B classes. The Kuppenheim press shop, which produces body parts for trucks and cars, belongs to the Gaggenau plant. The Unimog was assembled in Gaggenau from 1951 to 2002 .

The plant employs over 6,000 people (December 31, 2017) and is the largest industrial company in the Black Forest .

The Gaggenau plant was founded in 1894 as a Bergmann Industriewerk . At that time steam engines and automatons were manufactured. From 1895 the first series car was produced in the Murg Valley with the " Orient Express ". It is therefore the oldest continuously used automobile plant in the world. Three years later, Bergmann manufactured the first trucks and buses there. With the production of a “device for changing the speed of motor vehicles”, gear manufacturing began in Gaggenau in 1895. In 1907 the plant was taken over by Benz & Cie. Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik in Mannheim taken over. The Benz-Werke Gaggenau GmbH were in 1926 through the merger of Daimler and Benz part of the Daimler-Benz AG.

Axles for the Group's commercial vehicles have been produced here with around 3,000 employees since 1970. It is the former Henschel commercial vehicle plant that Daimler-Benz was able to integrate through the takeover of Hanomag-Henschel .
