Military vehicles are all vehicles used by armed forces to carry out their tasks. They include all land , air and water vehicles equally when used in military operations.

history

With the invention of the internal combustion engine , non-motorized vehicles were replaced by motorized vehicles in the armies of all countries. Previously, the Protze was used to transport guns or mounts by horse ( cavalry ), bows and arrows , spears or lances ( artillery ), military bicycles , IF8 infantry carts and later the chariot ( infantry ). Among the non-motorized vehicles there was already the sled for rescuing the wounded / fallen but also for transporting the goods; it was later replaced by the Aerosani for rescuing the wounded .

Motorization began in particular with the use of the truck as a means of transport for troops, artillery and material in the land vehicles , and the motor boat or the hovercraft in the watercraft , as well as the combat helicopters , reconnaissance and fighter jets in the aircraft , including the aircraft carrier .

In order to adapt the vehicles to the intended tasks, they have, if necessary, reinforced chassis to protect against land mines or other booby traps , all-wheel drive and off-road gear . For cost reasons, however, series components from civil vehicle production are used whenever possible. In addition to the usual vehicle lighting, there may be camouflage lights that have only a weak light output so that they are not easily noticed. To camouflage the vehicles get mostly a camouflage.

Conversely, specially developed vehicles are later also used as civil vehicles for special tasks, e.g. B. for emergency vehicles and the road inspection service of customs or the Federal Office for Goods Transport .

Special combat vehicles, especially battle tanks, have been developed since the First World War .
