In Austrian road traffic law, an army vehicle is a motor vehicle or trailer that is used by the armed forces or the army administration . With military vehicle , however, are generally all vehicles military meant use, and foreign.

The military vehicles, defined as army vehicles in § 2 definition of terms 1. 38th Motor Vehicle Act 1967 (KFG) , are  regulated in § 97 KFG. There three classes are defined:

  • Civil vehicles used by the armed forces (line 3)
  • Army vehicles that are specially built and equipped for their military purpose (line 1)
  • Army vehicles that are specially built or equipped for military use in connection with combat missions or are dedicated to this purpose due to their armament, armor or other construction (line 2)

The term motor vehicle includes, as in the entire KFG, "vehicles intended for use on roads or used on roads", in addition to rail vehicles (§ 2. Z. 1 1. KFG), also motorcycles , but not bicycles . Trailers are also recorded accordingly, including wagons ( trailer wagons , also for draft animals, Section 1. Z. 1 1. KFG).

Army vehicles and military vehicles are exempt from numerous regulations of the KFG. For example, item 1 includes the open or tarpaulin-covered troop transport trucks of the armed forces, a use of passenger transport that would by no means be permitted in the civilian sector. The third group (line 2) are the military vehicles in the real sense, such as tanks , wheeled armored vehicles , artillery , armored or armed trucks and tractors .

In road traffic, all relevant regulations, exceptions in particular for columns ( closed trains , § 29  Z.2,3 Road Traffic Act  1960, StVO) apply to army and military vehicles - these may maintain the closed train even contrary to other rules.

Foreign military vehicles are in principle not allowed to enter Austria due to the neutrality obligation - therefore foreign troop contingents, such as NATO, are smuggled through Austria on the rolling road (rail transit). Excluded from this are "foreign military vehicles in the context of operations, exercises or training measures to be carried out jointly with the armed forces" (§ 67 Z. 3 KFG), foreign vehicles are then legally equivalent to Austrian.
