Tramagal is a small town ( vila ) in Portugal .
history
Since June 24, 1754, the place has been the seat of an independent municipality. It took off after Eduardo Duarte Ferreira (1856–1948) expanded his flourishing iron workshop here in 1920 into a machine factory, the Grande Fábrica de Metalúrgica with initially 250 workers, later Fábrica de Máquinas Agrícolas do Tramagal . The manufacture of vehicles for the military in the Portuguese colonial war from 1961 allowed the number of workers to grow to well over 3,000. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the subsequent end of the colonial war, the factory began to decline. In the meantime, it produced automobiles for the Portuguese brand Portaro and was thus able to secure its existence. As a result of the market opening after Portugal joined the EU in 1986, the factory ran into serious difficulties and was closed in 1995.
On July 3, 1986 Tramagal was elevated to a small town.
