Western Star 4900 from 1997

Western Star is an established in 1967 US American truck maker. In 1981 Western Star became an independent brand of the former truck and car manufacturer White Motor Company . Today Western Star is a Daimler subsidiary and is based in Portland , Oregon .

history

The history of the Western Star brand began in 1967 when the White Motor Company founded the White Western Star division with headquarters in Cleveland and production facilities in Kelowna . When the White Motor Company went bankrupt in 1980 and was taken over by Volvo , the subsidiary Western Star could be acquired by Canadian entrepreneurs. It was renamed as an independent manufacturer in Western Star Trucks Inc. and was sold in 1990 to the Australian Terrence Peabody ; a collaboration with DAF followed .

1995 Ontario Bus Industries acquired and changed its name then with Bus Industries of America to Orion Bus Industries . The British truck manufacturer ERF followed in 1996 .

In 2000 the company was broken up. The subsidiary ERF was sold to MAN , while the rest was taken over by Freightliner and thus belongs to Daimler AG . In 2002 the production of Western Star was located in Portland (Oregon). Since 2015, Western Star Trucks have also been built at the Freightliner factory in Cleveland , North Carolina .

Western Star has a high level of customer loyalty, especially through “owner-operators” (self-employed truck drivers in the USA). There are three types of robust vehicles in the current 4900 series. The 4900 series is also used for heavy duty concrete mixers and for the military.
