The S chwere K leave was (SK) a truck series of manufacturer Daimler-Benz . Introduced in 1988, the new heavy commercial vehicle series "SK" (from 17 tons) came out with new engines, new cabs and new transmissions . In addition to the cab variants Large G, Long, Medium and Short S, there was also a short cab with a top sleeper ex works. The integral drive system was technically expanded, which means that all components from the engine to the transmission to the rear axle are Mercedes-Benz parts. The G4 transmissions have been newly developed and offer 9 or 16 gears and a light aluminum housing. From a motorization of 290 HP, the electro-pneumatic switching aid EPS is used as standard. A central lubrication system is also standard. A new development was a 330 hp V6 engine, available from spring 1989. In the naturally aspirated engines , the bore was enlarged from 128 to 130 mm. The motor ratings are indicated on the nameplate according to the old net measurement, i.e. with fan. In analogy, the light truck series, which was previously known internally as LN2, was now referred to as “ LK ” for “light class”. The truck models of the SK series were produced from 1989 to 1998 and then replaced by the Actros , which had been offered in parallel since 1996.

The series emerged from a revision of the new generation "NG" in 1989. The driver's cab differed only slightly from the NG: the radiator grille and smoke deflectors were optically connected and the lower edges of the window frames in the doors fell off towards the front. This feature was in 1977 when T 1 in 1984 and LK introduced types. At the 1989 IAA, Mercedes-Benz presented the new SK top model 1748, which was equipped with the well-known 14.6 liter engine.

The SK series was named " Truck of the Year " in 1990 . From autumn 1990 the vehicles were increased from 17 t to 18 t GVW or from 24 t to 25 t in accordance with a change in the law. Mercedes-Benz has been offering an improved constant throttle engine brake since 1990 . This is intended to elicit improved braking torque even from engines with a small displacement. By an additional, by compressed air controlled valve in the cylinder head is prevented from being supported by compressed air, the piston in its downward movement. The outlet of this valve opens into the manifold , where the compressed air can escape. This also reduces the load on the valves and the engine braking noise. From then on, the LEV engines met the Euro-1 emissions standard. From 1990, performance specifications were made in accordance with ISO guidelines with a “loosely rotating viscous fan”. This formally increased the performance data slightly.

In 1994 the SK models, which, apart from the engines, were essentially based on the NG design from 1973, received a facelift , which impresses with the slightly modified front design. The cab was also referred to as the “deflector cab” because of the visually very dominant side wind deflectors. The most significant of the many changes to the SK was the changeover to Euro 2 in 1994: turbocharging , intercooling and electronic engine management became mandatory. The injection now takes place via a slide valve pump which, now electronically controlled, generates 1200 bar pressure. The amount of fuel is no longer controlled mechanically, but via an electromagnetic signal box that adapts the start of delivery to the respective load spectrum, and instead of 5-hole nozzles, 6-hole nozzles are now installed.

The new top model from then on was the 390 kW SK 1853, whose 14.6 liter engine achieved a maximum torque of 2300 Nm.

Engines

SK chassis were available with 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 32, 33, 35, 36 and 41 tons technically permissible total weight. The new twelve and 14 ton medium-weight "MK" trucks also had the SK cabs. In terms of wheel formulas, there were 4x2, 4x4, 6x2 with a leading axle, with a trailing axle, with a trailing axle with double tires, liftable, steered etc., 6x4, 6x6, 8x4, 8x6 and 8x8.
