The Perfstausee , also called the Breidenstein flood retention basin , between Breidenbach and Breidenstein is a flood retention basin in the Hessian district of Marburg-Biedenkopf . The operator is the district committee or the water association "Upper Lahngebiet". The dam , consisting of a main and pre- dam , is mainly used for flood protection for Perf and Lahn and thus also relieves the Rhine .

The catchment area of the 18 hectare reservoir is 112.5 km².

Geographical location

The Perfstausee is located in the north of the Gladenbacher Bergland . It spreads between the core town of Breidenbach and the Biedenkopfer district of Breidenstein on the lower reaches of the Perf, a right-hand tributary of the Lahn. The pre-barrier upstream of the main barrier is located in the Im Wehr nature reserve near Breidenstein ( CDDA no. 163891; designated in 1990; 14.17  hectares in size).

Federal road 253 runs west past the reservoir in the section between Breidenbach and Breidenstein . From here, a little to the west of the inlet of the Perf in the Vorsperre, the district road  108 branches off , which leads west to the Breidenbacher district Wiesenbach . The route of the disused Schelden Valley Railway runs parallel to the B 108 .

Dam and hydropower

The dam was raised from 1984 to 1993 and put into operation in 1995. It is 5 m wide at its crown and 85 m wide at the bottom. The dam, which surrounds the northeast end of the reservoir in a semicircle, is about 500 m long.

A hydropower plant with a Kaplan turbine has been running on the Perfstausee since December 15, 2011 . It generates electricity for the Biedenkopfer public utilities.

Reservoir

The reservoir is fed by the Perf and its tributaries and normally has a storage volume of 600,000  . In the event of a flood, the lake can cover a maximum area of around 18 ha; then its water level is 307.4  m above sea level. NHN , and the lake volume would then amount to 2.215 million m³. In permanent traffic it is around 13 hectares in size, and then its water level is 301  m above sea level. NHN  - around 4 m above the bottom of the dam. Its average flow rate is around 1,700 liters / second. During floods, the reservoir can hold up to 2.035 million cubic meters. The water depth of the main dam then rises to up to 10.40 m. The pre-lock has water depths of up to 8 m.

Freetime activities

The main barrier of the Perf reservoir is approved for swimming and is monitored by the Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft ( DLRG ) during swimming ; the bathing area is 2.5 to 3.5 m deep. In 2015, the water quality of the lake was rated as “poor” by the European Environment Agency, so the lake was closed during this bathing season.

In addition to a restaurant, there is a mobile kiosk right on the shore during the summer months. The lake is integrated into the cycle path network of the Lahn-Dill-Bergland via the lake cycle path . The cycle path begins in Wallau at the railway stop of the Upper Lahn Valley Railway and leads over the Perfstausee to the Aartalsee .
