The Perf is a 20 km long, southern and orographically right tributary of the Lahn in the Hessian district of Marburg-Biedenkopf . It flows in the northern Gladenbacher Bergland . The longest strand over its left tributary Gansbach is 22.8 km long.

The river is first mentioned in 913 as Pernaffa , and it gave its name to Perfgau (pagus Pernaffa) , a medieval county . With a catchment area of 113.343 km² and a discharge of 1.741 m³ / s, the Perf is the most water-rich inner river in the Gladenbacher Bergland and, along with the salt flats and the Aar, the most important.

geography

course

source

The Perf rises on the Bottenhorn plateaus southeast of the village of Bottenhorn , a part of Bad Endbach . Its source is in the district of Bad Endbacher Hülshof in a meadow landscape northwest below the wooded pig's head ( 519.2  m above sea  level ), at about 506  m altitude.

Upper Perftal

The Perf flows mainly in a northerly direction and with the exception of the area around Wolzhausen and Breidenbach in the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park . After a little more than 900 m of flow, it takes up the Sauernwiesbach on the right-hand side, which rises east-south-east of Bottenhorn near the southern foot of the Scheid mountain ( 538.7  m ) in a spacious meadow landscape, is about 800 m long and the course of which is the border between the Bottenhorn and Hülshof districts forms. Then the Steinackerbach flows into Bottenhorn from the left.

About 1000 m after passing the Steffenberg district Steinperf , the Perf leaves the Bottenhorn plateau and henceforth represents the main river of the Breidenbacher Grund . In the Upper Perftal, the Steffenberg districts Ober- and Niedereisenhausen and finally Quotshausen flow through. In Niedereisenhausen the Perf flows from the left with the Gansbach, its most important tributary and in Quotshausen, also from the left, the Hörle flows into it.

Lower Perftal

After Wolzhausen, the first district of Breidenbach, has flowed through, the Perf gets a slight north-westerly turn and flows about 1000 m further between two forests into the much wider, Lower Perftal . There, before the main town of Breidenbach, the Diete flows from the left, which follows the federal road 253 into the Perftal.

muzzle

After flowing through the Perfstausees , a flood retention basin between Breidenbach and the Biedenkopfer district of Breidenstein to relieve the Lahn and Rhine , the Perf passes Breidenstein and creates a bow around the Breidenstein Castle . Shortly afterwards , in the south of the district and opposite the settlement of the Biedenkopfer district of Wallau at an altitude of 289  m , it flows into the Lahn coming from there from the west .

On the main flow issue

At the confluence of the Perf and Gansbach in Niedereisenhausen, the Gansbach is 11.1 km long and has a catchment area of 23.174 km², while the Perf is only 8.3 km long and has a catchment area of 18.848 km²; the Gansbach comes together with the remaining 11.7 km of the Perf flow section to a total length of 22.8 km. The Perf has an average discharge (MQ) of 274.2 l / s and the Gansbach 237.2 l / s. Because of the larger MQ value, the Perf is hydrologically the main flow of the river system.

Traffic routes

The Perf flows - with the exception of the Bottenhorn - Steinperf section  - as far as Breidenbach parallel to state road  3049 and runs through districts of Steffenberg and Bad Endbach ; the Hausebach stream runs along this road above Steinperf. From Breidenbach to the confluence with the Lahn, the Perf flows roughly parallel to the federal highway 253 , which meets the B 62 near the confluence of Wallau . The B 253 is the most important trunk road in the Perf catchment area, which follows the Diete above the Perf lower reaches of the Diete and beyond the watershed between Oberer Lahn and Dill finally follows Simmersbach and Dietzhölze to the Dillenburger Dilltal.

The longest Perf tributary, Gansbach, runs - with the exception of its upper course close to the source - along the L 3042 through the villages of Angelburg , until it finally runs down through the Scheldt Forest ; The L 3042 meets the L 3049, which runs along the Perf, near the Gansbach estuary in Niedereisenhausen.
