The castle ruins , the palace and the villa are still owned by the von Breidenbach zu Breidenstein family, who belong to the Althessian knighthood .

location

The castle ruins are located on the southwestern outskirts of Breidenstein. The castle was a spur castle above the Perf . The castle and a villa were later built next to the former castle.

history

The complex goes back to the Lords of Breidenbach, first mentioned in 1213. They owned Breidenstein and Breidenbach . During the disputes between Kurmainz and the Landgraviate of Hesse in the late 13th century, they tried to establish an independent rule. To secure them, they built castles in Breidenstein, Breidenbach and at the Rossebach farm (near Breidenbach). In 1304 the lords of Breidenbach became Hessian castle men at Biedenkopf Castle . In 1353 the family was pledger of the Hessian authorities in Marburg and Biedenkopf .

Breidenstein Castle was built between 1387 and 1394. The construction was preceded by a failed castle in 1387 near Eisenhausen in what is now Steffenberg . The Breidenbachers transferred the castle to Landgrave Herman II of Hesse as early as 1395 and then got it back as a Hessian fief . With the construction of the castle, the place Breidenstein was laid out. As early as 1398, King Wenceslas granted the place city rights.

Between 1712 and 1714, the von Breidenbach zu Breidenstein family built today's castle in the baroque style with a half-timbered upper floor . It is also known as the Alter Hof or Lower Castle . On the river side, the castle has four floors, on the slope side only two floors and the two gables are visible. The house has a heavy balustrade staircase inside .

In 1910 the plant was above the castle to a villa in the Art Nouveau adds. Today it is also known as the Upper or New Castle .

investment

Only larger sections of the curtain wall and the foundations of a tower have survived from the castle.

The castle, some farm buildings and the villa have been preserved.
