Hohenfels Castle

The Hohenfels between Allendorf and Buchenau is located in the municipality Dautphetal in Marburg-Biedenkopf in Hessen . It was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Hohenfels , the local lords in the area of what is now the Dautphetal community.

Geographical location

The Höhenburg consists of a double castle on the summits of the Hohenfels and the small Hohenfels and is located at around 400 m above sea level. NN. It can be assumed that the castle complex was built in several construction phases. The older part of the double castle is the western castle with an area of around 560 m², the eastern part is also smaller at around 390 m².

history

The exact construction date of the castles is unknown. The castles were owned by the Lords of Hohenfels. The family was first mentioned in 1174, when a Ludwig von Hohenfels appeared as a witness for Landgrave Heinrich Raspe .

In a document dated July 29, 1249, Konrad, Gumpert and Eckhard von Hohenfels, Volpert Hosekin and Siegfried Slimph are named as lords of the castle. The Lords of Hohenfels were on the side of the Archbishopric Mainz , which is why Hohenfels Castle was razed in 1293 under Landgrave Heinrich I. According to archaeological findings, the castle has not been used since the end of the 13th century.

Since only a few parts of the former complex can still be seen, it remained undiscovered for a long time. With the help of the University of Marburg , the Hohenfels Castle Association has been researching and maintaining the castle ruins since 1997 .

investment

A few remains of the wall and parts of the castle's cellar vaults can still be seen. The facility is freely accessible and is now provided with information boards.
