Hohenfels (Hessian noble family)

Coat of arms of those of Hohenfels

The Lords of Hohenfels were a wealthy Hessian noble family, divided into several lines. It belonged to the lower nobility and was first mentioned in 1174 when a Ludwig von Hohenfels ("lodewicus de honsvels") was present together with Konrad von Marburg as a witness at an enfeoffment of a Count von Berg .

history

Location of Hohenfels Castle

The address calendar of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt from 1790 contains a lot about this Hohenfels.

“The Knights of Hohenfels and those of Döring zu Elmshausen both had their homes half an hour away from Buchenau . They lived in a constant war with one another. As a result, the von Döring were compelled by the knights of Hohenfels to take up their residence in Biedenkopf (at that time still a village).

When Landgrave Heinrich brought the child into obedience to the knighthood in Hesse, who were outraged against him, the two permanent castles of the Knights of Hohenfels located in the Buchenau district were completely destroyed in 1293. According to a legend, those knights who were persecuted by the Landgrave let the horseshoes put on their horses the wrong way round, and thus retire back to their castle. The superstition prevailing at the time made them 'wild hunters' who (...) roamed the Eden tour of Wald (Langenlohe). "

See also the General Encyclopedia of Sciences and Arts :

“The Hohenfelse belonged to those families who had united against Landgravine Sophia , then regent of Hesse; But their castle was conquered in 1248, they had to take it as a fief from the Landgravine, renounce their claims to the Count's Court of Dautphe and promise peace and quiet with a fine of 500 marks in Silber (1249). They provided 13 nobles as guarantors, among them the Counts of Ziegenhain and Solms . "

Hohenfels family

The family treated here is the von Hohenfels family from Hesse. She belonged to the lower nobility, but stood out so that she could join the high nobility. Both the coats of arms and the entire historical compilation suggest that the Hosekin, Rump and Kornigel families also belonged to this family. Also with the family von Drahe ( Trohe ) Johannes von Arnoldi assumes (in his Miscellanees p. 247) the probability that they belonged to the tribe Kornigel. It was probably initially by names that later passed on to the successors.

possession

The possession of the von Hohenfels family included both allodies and fiefdoms and extended through the whole of Breidenbach , the former Blankenstein office , the Lahn region towards Marburg and on to Kassel . From 1324 they owned the Viermünden court as a fiefdom. They were also among the vassals of the Count of Solms . In addition, the von Hohenfels were involved in the Grafschaft Dautphe , had to inherit from the Mainz St. Stephansstift (1270) the court in Ohmen with the patronage right , goods in Steinershausen , the tithes in Ober- and Niederohmen , Warzenbach , Kernbach , Butelshausen and half tithing to Asphe . They were Ganerbe with the Döring and Breidenbach ; participated in the courts of Lixfeld, Breidenbach , Eisenhausen and Wallau.

They contributed to fiefdoms: the church set at Breidenbach, the tithes at Elbernhausen , Oberasphe , Diedenshausen , Elpergshausen (on the way from Treisbach to Sachsenberg,) Göttingen , Dausenbach , Silberg , Treisbach , Witterkusen , Betzendorf , Kalbe , Obernheim , Damshausen , Melsbach , Biedenkopf , Breidenbach , Gladenbach , Weiffenbach , Scheierbach , two farms in Derbach ( Deckensbach ), the tithe in Engelbach , Güttelshausen , Fleckenbühl , Hönscheid , a farm in Günterau , a forest between Dreisbach and Niederasphe , the tithe in Wallau , Herzhausen , Buchenau , den Church set to Amönau , Tenth warts Bach , church fief to Geismar , Ostheim and Simon Stockhausen in Kassel , tithing to -be Hausen , Hauwelte , Humbrachtshausen , Eldenkusen , Belter mountain , Benne kusen , Saßen mountain , Butzebach , Atzelhan , arable Hausen , outdoor-Gosfelden , Gudenhausen , kuwe , low Dieten , Tithes and land at Brunstadt and Roth , tithes at Westheim , a farm and a mill at Rengersha usen , a farm in Neunkirchen, tithe in Ageshausen (= Eikshausen , in the parish of Geismar,) the village of Radehausen , a farm in Wonsdorf , Meißen , Schachten , Ellerzhausen , Viermünden , Oberallendorf , Ybenhausen ; Tithe to Irmershausen , Volprechtshausen , Lindenhan , Obernschreuffe , Eckelshausen and the tithe to Simmersbach .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of those von Hohenfels is an eagle wing. Since coats of arms from different ages are characteristic signs of art and taste in terms of their drawing, five versions of the Hohenfels coat of arms exist for a period of two centuries: by Volpertus Hesekinus (1249), by Eckard von Hohenfels (1275), by Cornigel miles (1347), by Johann Rump von Hohenfels (1380) and by Ludwig von Hohenfels (1471).

Eckard von Hohenfels had a star on the piston of the wing, while Ludwig von Hohenfels had one above the wing. Nothing is known about the meaning of the wing, nor the star, nor its various leadership. There is also little information about the access of the buffalo horns in Ludwig von Hohenfels coat of arms seal. The tincture is also not specified.

In the coat of arms hall in Rotenburg, the coat of arms of those von Hohenfels was on the first shelf after the garden under number 51.

Hohenfels Castle

Hand tear over the ruins of the Hohenfels Castle

The Hohenfels was in 1249 by the chief Felsern Conrad, Gumpert, Eckhard, brothers, and Volpert Hosekin, Sifrid Slimph the Countess Sophie ( Sophie von Brabant subject). There is still a document from 1277 that was issued in Hohenfels. The tip "B" shows only rubble made of stones and spit. Each of the two crests has a moat about thirty feet wide; there are strong ring walls. A few years ago a man by the name of J. Velten, from the nearby town of Allendorf, owner of the land, had the castle site excavated, through which a very large key, an iron kitchen tripod, iron nails and a scissor were taken from the Form of sheep shears were brought to light. It is unknown where these items ended up.

Local situation

The location of the castle can be seen on the steep hilltop in a straight line from west to east, from the smelting mill on the Lahn to the village of Elmshausen. The ridge is very steep towards the Lahn (north). On the general staff map, the Hohenfels is marked with the name: "Former Hohenfels Castle". The two mountain tops are only about 180 paces apart. The tip "A" is now a trigonometric triangle point III. Ranks. There is still a well-kept vault with a double layer of walls about 25 feet long (cavity); "A" and "b" are fragments of walls; "A" about five feet tall and "b" nearly ten feet tall.
