history
Rosenthal was founded around 1327 by the Archbishop of Mainz , Matthias von Buchegg, as a Mainz outpost against the Landgraviate of Hesse , reinforced with a castle (demolished around 1700) and thus expanded to become the center of the office of the same name . Rosenthal was first mentioned as a city ( oppidum ) as early as 1343 . After the end of the Hessian-Mainz disputes in 1427, Rosenthal came to the Landgraviate of Hesse as a pledge in the course of the Mainz collegiate feud in 1464 . After the Merlau Treaty , it was finally completely assigned to Hessen-Marburg in 1583 . After this Hessian branch line died out , Rosenthal came into the possession of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel in 1604 , with which it fell to Prussia in 1866 . During the short-lived Kingdom of Westphalia (1806-1813), Rosenthal was the administrative seat of the canton of Rosenthal . The Rosenthal District Court existed until 1932 .
The city gained dubious fame in 1688 through the last witch burnings in Hesse.
coat of arms
Blazon : "In the red shield there is a six-spoke silver wheel , accompanied by a five-petalled golden rose with a blue lump and green sepals on both sides."
The city coat of arms commemorates the founding of the city by the Archbishop of Mainz. The diocese coat of arms (wheel) was supplemented by the roses from the archbishop's family coat of arms.
Incorporations
As part of the Hessian regional reform on April 1, 1972, the previously independent communities Roda and Willershausen were incorporated into Rosenthal.
