geography

Allendorf is located in the valley of the Eder between Frankenberg , a middle center , and Battenberg west of the Burgwald and east of the Breiten Struth in the Ederbergland . The closest regional center is the university town of Marburg .

Neighboring communities

Allendorf borders in the north on the municipality of Bromskirchen , in the east on the city of Frankenberg , in the southeast on the municipality of Burgwald , and in the south and west on the city of Battenberg (all in the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg).

Community structure

Since the regional reform in 1971, the core community of Allendorf with the districts of Battenfeld, Rennertehausen, Haine and Osterfeld has formed a community in the wide Ederaue. In 1999 the Osterfeld housing estate was given the status of a district.

history

In 1107, Allendorf was first mentioned in a document as a gift from Count Kunimund to the Imperial Abbey of Hersfeld . In 1567 the community with the Battenberg office came first to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Marburg and in 1624 to Hessen-Darmstadt . In 1866 it became part of the Prussian district of Battenberg, in 1932 of the Frankenberg district and 1974 of the Waldeck-Frankenberg district.

The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Allendorf in 1830:

"Allendorf (L. Bez. Battenberg) evangel. Branch village; is 1 ⁄ 2 St. from Battenberg an der Eder, has 118 houses and 720 inhabitants, who are Protestant apart from 3 Cath. and 23 Jews. - In the division that took place in 1291 between the ore monastery of Mainz and Count Hermann von Battenberg, the court of Allendorf remained among others. But Allendorf probably came to Mainz with other places by purchase in 1297, which was given to Landgrave Heinrich III in 1464. pledged. According to a legend, there was a salt works here in ancient times, the earlier first being of which, however, the still common names "Salt wells and salt paths" make probable, but there are still no more detailed traces and information. "

Incorporations

In the course of administrative reform in Hesse were voluntarily incorporated : On February 1, 1971, until then independent municipality Battenfeld; Rennertehausen was added on April 1, 1971; Haine followed on July 1, 1971. Population structure

According to the 2011 census , there were 5,626 residents in Allendorf on May 9, 2011. Among them were 416 (7.4%) foreigners, of whom 81 came from other EU countries, 284 from other European countries and 51 from other countries. The inhabitants lived in 2221 households. Of these, 523 were single households , 625 couples without children and 857 couples with children, as well as 191 single parents and 25 shared apartments . The high proportion of foreigners is largely the result of the economic upswing that the Viessmann works brought to the community in the 1960s and the associated immigration of guest workers .

In 2007 Allendorf had the lowest average age as well as the highest proportion of foreigners of all municipalities and cities in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district. In addition, the highest number of German citizens in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district whose place of birth was outside of the Federal Republic of Germany was found in Allendorf.

On April 11, 1967, the community of Allendorf-Eder in what was then the district of Frankenberg was given a coat of arms with the following blazon by the Hessian Minister of the Interior : "In blue two turned away golden crescents over a six-pointed silver star." The coat of arms was awarded after approval Expert opinion from March 1, 1967 by Karl Ernst Demandt . This was based on research by the former director of the Marburg State Archives Carl Knetsch († 1938) and the archivist and librarian Hans Joachim von Brockhusen.

Originally the coat of arms was probably the family coat of arms of the noble family von Allendorf (Aldindorf, Altendorf), which died out in the 15th century, according to Knetsch and Brockhusen. The village chronicler Norbert Henkel criticizes the allegedly inadequate evidence for this assumption. Despite multiple documented mentioning of an aristocratic family named after the town of Allendorf, there is so far no evidence that today's municipal coat of arms served as their family coat of arms. Henkel cannot understand the documentary basis on which Knetsch linked the sketch of the coat of arms attached to his research with the family coat of arms of the von Allendorf family. The sketch of the coat of arms referred to here was probably based on the sandstone relief on the Battenfeld Church, which probably dates from the 15th century and which can still be seen there today. This is an alliance coat of arms that shows a coat of arms with turned away crescent moons over a star on the right and the coat of arms of the Biedenfeld family clearly identifiable on the left . According to heraldic interpretation, this alliance coat of arms illustrates that a woman of the von Allendorf family entered into a marriage with a man of the von Biedenfeld family.

It is possible that Knetsch drew the conclusion from a family tree of the von Biedenfeld family that he had created that it was the coat of arms of the von Allendorf family. Henkel concludes that today's municipal coat of arms cannot be traced back with certainty to a family coat of arms of the von Allendorf family, since their family coat of arms is not known or cannot be clearly assigned to them. It is therefore certain for him that the coat of arms belonged to a married wife of a man from the von Biedenfeld family. The identity and origin of this wife is still unclear. Based on the alliance coat of arms, it can be assumed that this couple may have been connected to the construction work on the Battenfeld church.

Public facilities

There are three day-care centers in the community (Allendorf, Battenfeld, Rennertehausen) which offer childcare places under church management. They are financially supported by the municipality.

Established businesses

Allendorf is home to the Viessmann works, the largest employer in the region. The heating technology manufacturer employs more than 12,500 people worldwide with an annual turnover of around 2.25 billion euros.

traffic

Allendorf lies at the intersection of federal highways 236 and 253 . Passenger traffic at the Allendorf (Eder) separation station on the Nuttlar – Frankenberg and Bad Berleburg – Allendorf railway lines has been discontinued, and both are only used in sections for freight transport. Allendorf also has a small airfield .
