Biedenfeld (noble family)

Biedenfeld , also Biedenfeldt or Bidenfeldt , is the name of an old Upper Hessian aristocratic family who probably came from Büdefeld (now desolate) near Goldhausen . The family, some of which still exist today, later acquired property and reputation in Württemberg and Baden . The line, which is based in Hesse, is currently still a member of the Althessian knighthood .

history

origin

The family was first mentioned in a document in 1215 with the brothers Gerlach and Sifrid von Biedenfeld . They belonged to the heirs of Blankenstein Castle near Gladenbach until 1261 . The uninterrupted trunk series begins with Johann von Biedenfeld zu Battenberg , who appears in documents between 1303 and 1339.

After Gustav Adelbert Seyler , G. (Gerlacus) dictus de Bydenvelt, mentioned in a document as early as 1180, also belonged to the family. The main name Gerlach was given to relatives until the end of the 13th century.

Spread

Members of the family belonged to the imperial knighthood in the Franconian knight circle . In 1518 the Biedenfeld and the Hundelshausen were enfeoffed with the Berneburg Castle in Berneburg near Sontra in Lower Hesse. Ruprecht von Biedenfeld falsely claimed in 1523, probably to excuse the alienation from the family estate, that no other Biedenfeld was alive.

In 1656 a half-timbered house was built on the stone bower, part of a former castle with a moat, for Hans Ernst von Biedenfeld.

Johann Christoph von Biedenfeld († 1731), ducal lieutenant colonel of Württemberg , married Christiana Leutrum von Ertingen . The sons Gustav Ferdinand, Friedrich Christoph, Johann Carl and Ernst Wilhelm von Biedenfeld emerged from the marriage. He moved the family in Württemberg and Baden, where it probably customary law supported baron title was recognized.

Gustav Ferdinand von Biedenfeld was Lord of Berneburg and Gosbach in 1778 , Burgmann of Sontra, Lieutenant General of the Duke of Württemberg . Gustav Ferdinand married Dorothea Ernestine von Gaisberg in his first marriage and Johanna Margarethe von Kaltenthal in his second marriage . Gustav Friedrich von Biedenfeld (1748–1817), a son from his first marriage, became the ducal Württemberg major and chamberlain , he married Johanna Heinerica von Beulwitz . His brother Ernst Heinrich von Biedenfeld (1751-1826) became royal Sardinian prime lieutenant and was last also chamberlain in Württemberg. The youngest of the brothers, Ferdinand Friedrich von Biedenfeld (1764-1834) became Major General of Baden and founded the line in the Grand Duchy of Baden .

Ernst von Biedenfeld (* 1793) was the commander of the 3rd Battalion of the 3rd Baden Infantry Regiment. He commanded the same regiment in the Baden uprising in 1849 . On July 23, 1849 he surrendered the Rastatt fortress to the Prussian troops and was therefore sentenced to death by shooting by a court martial in Rastatt on August 6, 1849 for high treason and treason . The sentence was carried out on August 9, 1849.

His brother was one of the most famous representatives of the family, the author and publicist Ferdinand Freiherr von Biedenfeld (1788–1862). He was theater director in Berlin and Weimar and editor of the magazine Der Elegante . He was the last of the Biedenfeld in Württemberg and Baden.

Rosa von Biedenfeld, born von Petrikowska, was entered in the royal Saxon nobility register on June 5, 1913 under the number 461.

Descendants of those "von Biedenfeld" currently live in Hesse, Upper Lusatia and as "Biedenfeld" in the USA.
