Ernst Gustav Benjamin Freiherr von Biedenfeld (born January 19, 1793 in Karlsruhe , † August 9, 1849 in Rastatt ) was an officer in the Baden army who later was regimental commander in the Baden Revolutionary Army from 1849 and was therefore executed.

origin

Biedenfeld was the son of Major General Ferdinand Friedrich von Biedenfeld and his wife Friedericke Christiane Dahler. He came from the Biedenfeld family, who originally lived in Upper Hesse . The Baden branch of the sex died out with him and his brother Ferdinand Ludwig in the male line.

Life

Biedenfeld joined the Baden army as an ensign as early as 1806 , where he became second lieutenant in 1808 . He took part in the 1808, 1812, 1813, 1814 and 1815 campaigns with the Baden army. In 1814 he was appointed captain. From 1816 he was garrisoned with Infantry Regiment No. 4 in Mannheim . In 1837 he was promoted to major in the Margrave Wilhelm No. 3 infantry regiment . After quarrels with superiors, he was retired in 1843. Biedenfeld then lived in Bühl and Offenburg . In 1848 he applied for a job in the Landwehr, but was not considered. In 1849, at the request of the revolutionary government, he initially took over the leadership of the first contingent of the people's armed forces in the offices of Bühl and Achern . On June 19, he was elected commander of his previous regiment and the revolutionary government made him a colonel. With Infantry Regiment No. 3 he was involved in the battles in Wiesental , Ubstadt and Bruchsal. He turned down the command of the federal fortress of Rastatt that had been offered to him , but was involved in the defense of the fortress enclosed by the Prussians and in the handover negotiations. After the surrender, a Prussian court martial imposed the death sentence on Biedenfeld, which was carried out on August 9 in Rastatt.

Commemoration

In Rastatt a street was named after Biedenfeld and in the old cemetery in Rastatt it is mentioned on the memorial stone for the revolutionaries of 1849.
