The Nemphetal near Bottendorf has the status of a nature reserve and has been a designated FFH area since 2004 . It is a near-natural Waldwiesenbach valley, as it is often found in the castle forest. It contains dystrophic pools and muddy areas, a variety of rare animal species such as the little grebe and black stork as well as rare plant species, especially aquatic plants. The created ponds date from the time of the Cistercians . The area covers an area of 36 ha.

The Nemphe is being renatured in several places by, among others, the Naturschutzjugend (NAJU) Frankenberg and the association water group Obere Eder in the fishing association Kurhessen in the area of the city of Frankenberg.

In the area of the Herrenweg there is a large, artificially irrigated wood storage area in the middle of the forest, a so-called wet storage area , whose water requirements are met from the Nemphe.
