The Nuttlar – Frankenberg railway is the 62.3 km long railway line from Nuttlar on the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway via Winterberg and Allendorf (Eder) to Frankenberg (Eder) . The route between Winterberg and Allendorf has been dismantled and dismantled.

history

construction

The construction of the section from Nuttlar to Winterberg was decided on May 20, 1898 by a law of the Prussian state parliament. The Nuttlar (Westphalia) –Steinhelle section was ready for operation on May 1, 1902. On the same day, the Steinhelle – Medebach Kleinbahn began operating a section as a branch line. The continuation from Steinhelle to Winterberg was opened on October 1, 1906.

At this point in time, the connection with the Hessian route network had already been decided. Numerous engineering structures were required between Winterberg and Bromskirchen , including three tunnels and a viaduct with a gradient of up to 2.5%. Continuous operations to Frankenberg began on December 1, 1908. In Frankenberg there was a connection to the Korbach – Warburg line . From 1910/1911 it was possible to continue from Allendorf with the Upper Edertal Railway to Bad Berleburg .

Second World War

On March 29, 1945, around nine in the morning, American tanks stopped a rocket train in Bromskirchen station that was on its way to Winterberg to be parked in the tunnel. The Americans fell with this V2 battery train from the Süd-Art group. Rgt. (Mot.) ZV901, Abt.Ia , camouflaged under tarpaulin, ten complete V2 rockets including fuel, railway launch pads , armored personnel carriers and flak vehicles as well as the operating instructions in their hands; only the warheads were missing. Three days later, the Americans had the valuable foray brought to Antwerp. From there the cargo was shipped to America and contributed to the development of American missile technology. Until then, the Americans only knew the V2 from its fragments after the impact. The capture of the train was also discussed in detail in Allied newsreels.

Development under the Federal Railroad

In addition to passenger traffic, extensive freight traffic was also handled over the route. In addition to the route endpoints, there were a total of eleven train stations and five stops. Several pairs of trains drove daily over the entire route. Special trains for winter sports enthusiasts often ran between Winterberg and the Ruhr area .

Former station building Allendorf (Eder)

In the 1960s, the operation caused growing shortfalls, especially in the middle section. Since investments were not made, this ultimately led to the suspension of passenger train traffic between Winterberg and Allendorf for safety reasons on November 14, 1966, as well as freight traffic between Hallenberg and Allendorf. This section was decommissioned and dismantled on May 28, 1967. The line between Frankenberg and Allendorf was used for continuous connections to Bad Berleburg until 1981. On May 30, 1992, freight traffic between Winterberg and Hallenberg was also discontinued and the section was dismantled, making it no longer possible to park winter sports trains to Winterberg in Hallenberg.

Development since the rail reform

Especially in winter the railway line is used for tourist traffic

In the 1990s, the rest of the local traffic between Bestwig and Winterberg was also at risk due to the low demand. Above all, the parallel Hallenberg – Winterberg – Olsberg bus line continues to compete with the railway line today, as it has a denser network of stops and in Olsberg it has optimal connections to the trains to Hagen and Kassel. In contrast, the shuttle trains to Bestwig offered a worse connection to the east and no travel time advantage compared to the bus when changing to the trains to Hagen. In order to increase the demand on the then RB 55, the n-car trains with diesel locomotives were replaced by more modern multiple units of the 628 series in 1995 and an hourly service was introduced between Bestwig and Winterberg in May 1998. Due to a lack of popularity, the frequency compression during the week was withdrawn after a year.

Since the route with its isolated commuter trains had no future, a continuous train service to the Dortmund regional center was developed from 2001. To this end, the RE 57 line, which previously ran between Meschede and Schwerte, was extended to Winterberg and turned to Dortmund at the western end. It initially ran every two hours on weekdays, while at the weekend, apart from two pairs of trains, it continued to run between Bestwig and Winterberg. The new line means that there are no two transfers when traveling to Dortmund and the journey time has been reduced by 34 minutes. After the introduction of the new offer, the demand developed very positively and an hourly offer to Dortmund was introduced on the weekend. Between 1997 and 2012 the number of passengers between Bestwig and Winterberg rose by 125% to 407 per day. In December 2004, the operation of the RE 57 line with the Sauerland network was put out to tender. The winner was the old operator DB Regio NRW , which purchased new Alstom Coradia LINT 41 multiple units for operation .

Passenger traffic on the remnant section from Frankenberg to Allendorf and Battenberg -Auhammer has largely been suspended since the summer weekend connections, which were only established in 2005, were canceled. The offer should primarily be aimed at cyclists and hikers. Since then, passenger traffic has only taken place sporadically, mostly on the occasion of various events such as B. the Eder bike tour. Freight traffic continues to exist on the two remaining sections.

Rails are no longer in the section between Winterberg (Westf) and Allendorf (Eder). The Winterberger Tunnel 1 was removed, the Winterberger Tunnel 2 has been closed. A cycle path has been running through the Bromskirchen tunnel since mid-2006. Together with the commissioning of the new Bigge station, the entire route to Winterberg was connected to an electronic interlocking (manufacturer: Tiefenbach), the operator station of which is located at the dispatcher in Bestwig. The dispatcher interlockings in Winterberg and Siedlinghausen were omitted. As part of the retrofitting, the connection points Deutsche Bauernsiedlung and Steinhelle, which had not been used for years, were also removed.

As part of the recommissioning of the local rail transport on the Brilon Wald – Brilon Stadt route , the expansion of the Bigge station, which was dismantled a few years ago, was funded. The stop was converted into a double-track train station with the possibility of crossing. This allows a uniform timetable to be introduced on all days of the week. Before the timetable change in December 2016, there were two different timetable positions on weekdays at two-hour intervals and on weekends at hourly intervals, as it was only possible to cross in Siedlinghausen. At the weekend, this led to an unfavorable frequency with long turning times in Winterberg and Dortmund, an additional vehicle circulation requirement and a guided tour almost at a block distance from RE 17 between Schwerte Ost and Bestwig. During the expansion, the platforms were completely rebuilt and brought to a uniform height of 76 cm above the top edge of the rails to enable barrier-free entry. The modernized station went into operation on November 25, 2013. In 2014, Winterberg train station was extensively modernized in preparation for the 2015 bobsleigh and skeleton world championships . The station building was demolished and a combined platform was built for quick transfers between bus and train. The bus lines S 50 to Hallenberg, S 40 to Niedersfeld and Schmallenberg , R 28 to Bad Berleburg, and the R 48 to Düdinghausen can be reached here. Platform 1, which was used by regular traffic, was made barrier-free during the modernization. Platform 2 was left in its original state as it is only used by special trains. The southern extension of the route and the parking facilities have now been built over with buildings from discount store chains.

In the summer of 2015, the tracks and the superstructure between Bestwig and Winterberg were completely modernized. The renovation of the existing building is intended to reduce the number of slow-moving areas. In recent years, these had to be set up again and again due to infrastructure deficiencies and led to operational restrictions. The new station building in Winterberg, built in October 2017, was chosen in 2018 by the Pro-Rail Alliance as one of two stations of the year.

As part of the new tendering process for the Sauerland network, new Pesa Link multiple units were originally supposed to run on the RE 57 line when the timetable changed in December 2016. The vehicles are to contain ticket machines and 36 bicycle parking spaces. Since the manufacturer Pesa did not deliver the new trains on time and the previous vehicles are bound in other transport contracts, vehicles of the 644 series are used temporarily . The new trains should only be available from March 2019. With the start of operations, the travel times between the days of the week were standardized.

Offer today

Between Bestwig and Winterberg there are currently two-hourly regional express trains on line 57 from / to Dortmund with diesel multiple units of the 644 series , e.g. T. in multiple traction. It is held in Bigge and if necessary (stop request) also in Siedlinghausen and Silbach. Outside of the peripheral locations of the day, trains are generally tied to and from Dortmund. The first train to the west runs differently as RE 17 to Hagen. In addition, an additional pair of trains is offered between Hagen and Winterberg in the winter months when there is good snow conditions. However, this is always included in the timetable at very short notice.

Today the route is primarily of importance for tourist traffic. The route is very popular with winter sports enthusiasts and, with the opening of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, also with cyclists. The demand for bicycle transport has meanwhile increased so much that additional locomotives with converted larger multi-purpose compartments had to be used. On weekends during the holidays and before public holidays, additional direct buses with bicycle trailers must run between Dortmund and Winterberg to meet demand. On peak days, up to 500 bicycles must be transported.

Since the demand for the route on weekdays is less than 500 travelers per kilometer of operating length, the NWL sees no need for an hourly service on weekdays in its local transport plan. The requirements for the operating times are clearly undercut. Accordingly, the last through train to Winterberg in the Dortmund regional center should not leave until after 8 p.m. Likewise from Winterberg in the direction of Dortmund. Today the last possibility is at 18:41 in Dortmund. From Winterberg the last through train to Dortmund leaves from 18:31. After that, a trip to Bestwig will only be offered at 21:31.

Planning

Starting with the timetable change in December 2019, a continuous pair of trains between Winterberg and Oberhausen is to be introduced as a test on 12 Saturdays during the winter season. The journey should start at around 07:15 in Oberhausen and stop in Mülheim, Essen, Bochum, Witten, Schwerte, Bestwig, Bigge, Siedlinghausen and Silbach. Arrival is planned around 10 a.m. The return trip is planned around 5 p.m. On the basis of the demand, it should be decided whether the supply will remain or will be further expanded.

As part of the reorganization of the local traffic plan of the Hochsauerlandkreis, the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) suggested that the conception of the train and bus connections in the Corridor Bestwig-Winterberg be reviewed in order to prevent mutual cannibalization of the lines RE 57 and S 50. To this end, the NWL suggests examining the establishment of new stops in Nuttlar, Brunskappel, Wulmeringhausen and the relocation of the stops in Siedlinghausen and Silbach. Passenger demand is to be shifted from bus route S 50 to RE route 57 and the bus services that are no longer available are to be redistributed to shuttle services. At the stop in Siedlinghausen, the remote location is criticized, which requires too long distances from the southern district. The area of the cemetery near the center of the village is named as the new location for the stop. The condition of the platform systems and the access to the current stop are also criticized.
