Álvaro Recoba , full name Álvaro Alexander Recoba Rivero , (born March 17, 1976 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player .
Career
In the club
Alvaro Alexander Recoba Rivero, also known as "El Chino" ("the Chinese") because of his Asian looks, began his career with Danubio FC in 1993 , where he made his debut as a player in 1994. In 1995 he moved to the traditional club Nacional Montevideo , where he scored 17 goals in 33 games for the capital city club. With Nacional he won both the Torneo Apertura 1996 and the Liguilla Pre-Libertadores in 1996 and 1997.
In 1997 Inter Milan signed him for a fee of 4.5 million US dollars. In his first encounter for Inter on August 31, 1997, he scored two goals against Brescia Calcio in 20 minutes, helping his team to a 2-1 victory. He stole the show from his strike partner Ronaldo , who also made his debut for Inter in the same game. After his first season at Inter Milan, Recoba was loaned to AC Venezia , where he scored eleven goals in 19 games.
After his return from Venice , Recoba developed into a regular player and crowd favorite over the next two seasons. In 2001 he was considered the highest paid player in the world with an annual salary of around 7.5 million US dollars. Recoba not only found enthusiastic supporters among the fans, his biggest fan is the club owner at the time, Massimo Moratti , who had always called Recoba his absolute favorite player and, under the then coach Roberto Mancini , campaigned to give his protégé more opportunities to play, da Recoba in his opinion is used too rarely under Mancini. In the 2007/08 season he was loaned to FC Turin .
At the end of June 2008, Inter Milan did not extend the expiring contract and Recoba moved to the Greek first division club Panionios Athens on a free transfer .
In January 2010 he moved back to Uruguay to Danubio FC where his professional career began in 1993, before moving to Nacional Montevideo in mid-2011 , where he also spent the 1996/97 season. In the 2011/12 season he won the Uruguayan championship with the Bolsos . In his 24 season appearances, in which he was only seven times in the starting eleven, he scored eight goals and was considered the most important player on the way to the championship - not only because of his decisive goal for the championship in the 1-0 victory in the final against Defensor of the team. Despite an existing, economically lucrative offer from China, he extended his contract with Nacional for another year in mid-July 2012. By the end of the 2012/13 season, Recoba had played 45 league games for Nacional. He scored 13 goals. There are also ten goalless games in the Copa Libertadores and four games (one goal) in the Copa Sudamericana . In the 2013/14 season he was used 19 times and scored two goals. He also played three times (no goal) in the 2014 Copa Libertadores . In the 2014/15 season, with 18 completed first division games (two goals), he contributed to winning the national championship again. He also played one encounter (no goal) in the 2015 Copa Libertadores . His contract ended after the season. After engagements at both newly promoted Villa Teresa and River Plate were in the room, Recoba announced in early August 2015 that he would no longer play in Uruguay. However, he would certainly be available for a new career station abroad, especially in exotic locations.
In January 2016, the Racing Club de Montevideo announced that Recoba would play for the club's team in the upcoming championship in beach soccer (fútbol playa) to be held at Playa Pocitos .
In the national team
On January 18, 1995, the then 18-year-old Recoba made his debut for the Uruguayan senior team against Spain . His last of 69 appearances for Celeste, in which he scored eleven international goals, he completed on July 10, 2007. (As of October 16, 2012)
During his membership in the Uruguayan national team, he took part in the Confederations Cup and the Copa America in 1997 . He was also part of the Uruguayan squad at the 2007 Copa America . He also played as part of the World Cup qualification for the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups . At the 2002 World Cup , he was also part of the Uruguayan squad .

Style of play
Initially traded as the successor to Uruguayan football legend Enzo Francescoli , Recoba is basically a striker. However, he can also be used as a hanging tip or on the left as a winger.
In addition to his excellent technical and playful skills, Alvaro Recoba is primarily characterized by his strong left foot. The Uruguayan has a very hard and precise shot, which enables him to shoot from medium shooting distances. In addition to his long-range shots, he is also known for his dreaded crosses and free kicks. In his team, he is considered a specialist in standard situations and therefore always creates danger.
