qualification

In the South American Confederation, the qualification was played in a single large group that included all ten countries. The first four qualified directly, and the fifth had to play two playoffs against the winner of the Oceania group.

Uruguay only reached fifth place in the South American group thanks to a slightly better goal difference against Colombia. The first play-off against Australia was just lost. With a 3-0 home win in the second leg, the last place in the final round was secured.

Games of the Uruguayan team

Uruguay was drawn into France's group, the big favorite for the title. The first game against Denmark, the competitor in second place, was lost a little unfortunate. Against the immensely disappointing French, a draw was reached, whereby Uruguay would have deserved the victory due to the clearer scoring chances.

In the last and decisive game against the surprise team Senegal, Uruguay were already 3-0 behind at half-time. However, the Africans slackened considerably in the second half of the game, so that the South Americans could still equalize. A victory would have been necessary to reach the next round. The two-time world champion was thus eliminated from the tournament. Denmark had qualified for the round of 16 before Senegal.

Uruguay - Denmark 1: 2
France - Uruguay 0-0
Senegal - Uruguay 3: 3
