Preliminary round
Japan was the host for the preliminary group draw. Opponents like Brazil, Argentina or France did not pose any immediate threat.
In the first game Japan had to play against Belgium. After the Europeans had long been superior in the field and deservedly took the lead with a goal from Marc Wilmots , the Japanese put the insecure Belgian defense under massive pressure in a determined attack. The game ended in a draw.
In the second game Japan finally got their first victory in a World Cup finals. Russia, the favorite to win the group, were beaten 1-0. In the last game, they achieved first place in Group H with a 2-0 victory over outsiders Tunisia.

Round of 16
In the round of 16, Japan fell behind against Turkey early on. Despite the field superiority and a corner ratio of 8 to 4, one could not equalize against the massed Turkish defense. One of the two hosts was thus eliminated from the tournament.
