Preliminary round

Sweden had been drawn into the so-called “group of deaths”, in which Argentina, England and Nigeria, two favorites for the title fought for the two round of 16 places.

In the first game a draw was reached against the English. Sweden initially fell 1-0 down against Nigeria, Africa's strongest on paper, before Larsson scored two goals to secure victory. The round of 16 was close enough to touch. The next opponent, however, was Argentina, next to France one of the favorites to win the tournament.

Sweden took the lead after an hour. The playfully superior South Americans, who absolutely had to win to reach the next round, permanently overran the Swedish goal. Argentina awarded a penalty in the 88th minute. Immediately afterwards, the balance was achieved. It remained a draw and Sweden moved into the round of 16 as group winners.

Round of 16

Sweden were considered an easy favorite against Senegal, the only remaining African team. After 90 minutes it was 1-1 and the game went into extra time. The golden goal rule applied, so the first goal would decide.

The Swedes almost scored the winning goal in the 95th minute, but Svensson's shot hit the post. A few minutes later, Senegal scored the winning goal with a golden goal.
